INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FL - “Stephanie Austin, a local business owner, is vehemently opposed to smart meters.

I can't imagine too many people in Indian River County have a "Refuse Smart Meters" bumper sticker on their car, but she does. So, in these parts, she's way ahead of the curve in terms of opposition.

"I don't like how it's forced upon us," she said. "There are just too many questions."

WORCESTER COUNTY, MA - "National Grid has voluntarily withdrawn its proposal to implement a large-scale smart gird pilot program in Worcester County in the US state of Massachusetts, according to local news media.

National Grid hopes to submit a second proposal to the DPU for review by Dec. 15 if not sooner, according to Cheri Warren, vice president of asset management for National Grid.

LAKELAND, FL - “City officials said they have no plans to adopt an opt-out program for Lakeland Electric customers worried about the safety of having smart meters at their homes.

City Manager Doug Thomas said it would be too costly and time consuming to provide an option for utility customers to opt out of having smart meters.”

LAKELAND, FL - “Faced with opposition from residents, officials are considering allowing Lakeland Electric customers to opt out of the smart meter program — but they could face higher costs.

The idea was discussed on Monday during a 45-minute meeting among top utility and city officials.

Customers who opt out of the program and choose to have a meter reader come to their home or business might have to pay a higher rate than those with smart meters.”
