ENROLL NOW to keep your ANALOG meter! FPL Letter goes out in March April & May 2014 to customers who refused smart meter.

FPL as of March 2014: “…if you prefer not to have the smart meter, you can choose to enroll in the Non-Standard Meter Option.” - From FPL’s info page about the new option to keep your analog meter. Steps you can take:
ENROLL with FPL by phone, online, or using the form on the letter you received – or take your chances on losing your analog meter or having power shut off. It’s a chance some may be able to take, others not.

● In addition to the enrollment procedure, send a certified letter to reconfirm you do not consent to a smart meter or any type of digital meter, that you have enrolled in the Non-Standard Meter Option, and agree to pay the additional fees only under duress and protest. This is important. Find contact names and addresses below.

Send a formal complaint to the PSC (Florida’s Public Service Commission governing utilities). Easy to use web form for complaints is here: http://www.psc.state.fl.us/consumers/complaints/index2.aspx

Enrolling with FPL:
Must have a log-in to enroll online, or you can call 1-866-252-6047, or mail in the form at bottom of letter.

If you enroll online, print the screen that displays the message “we have successfully processed your request” which also specifies the additional costs to you of $95 one-time plus $13/month. My acknowledgement stated that charges will start with the June bill.

It looks like you can enroll online even if you have not yet received a letter. It is recommended you enroll to keep your old meter, even though the following statement on the “Terms and Conditions” page indicates that this will be the default if you do nothing. Policies can be changed in an instant, and it will be impossible to get an analog meter after it has been removed. The “non-communicating” digital meters are not a viable option, and can be upgraded with new components or have wi-fi turned on without our knowledge.

“Automatic Enrollment
Even if they don’t actively enroll in the Non-Standard Meter Option, customers who have a non-standard meter will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the Non-Standard Meter Option if they prevent FPL from installing a smart meter or fail to respond to requests to select a meter option. Eligibility rules apply.”

We do not yet know what will happen to those who do not enroll, or who enroll and boycott paying the extra fees, or other scenarios. The following recent news story indicates that FPL is ready to flip the switch and cut off power to customers who do not cooperate.

You can submit your complaint to PSC online! Florida Public Service Commission online form can be found here: http://www.psc.state.fl.us/consumers/complaints/index2.aspx and it’s worth pointing out that this PSC page states that “telecommunications” complaints must now be submitted to Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. While it is our current understanding that smart meters are under the PSC’s jurisdiction, it may be a good idea to complain to both entities.
